Good Neighbours Protect Each Other’s Water
There is a gravel mining application under review for a 700 acre below-water-table blasting quarry near the Forks of the Credit Park.
Because the quarry floor must be kept dry for excavation, the water – up to 500 million litres per year - must be pumped out every day for at least the next 50 years.
When CBM encountered challenges about where to discharge all the dirty water, the company turned to Chris Humeniuk, a Caledon resident and owner of the golf course TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. He had already leased half the land to the company CBM Aggregates, a subsidiary of the Brazilian conglomerate Votorantim Cimentos.
To resolve the discharged water problem, Chris Humeniuk has now agreed for the water to be pumped to the golf course he owns - TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. The water would be stored in man-made ponds, and then much of the dirty, warmed water would drain into the Credit River from there, endangering local drinking water and one of Southern Ontario’s last remaining Brook trout populations.

Why is this a concern?
- Pumping this amount of groundwater for 50 years could make local wells vulnerable by altering the surrounding water table
- Steady discharge of warmed, sediment-filled water into the Credit River could irreparably harm its ecosystem
- This ecosystem includes one of southern Ontario’s last remaining Brook trout populations
- Brook trout are sensitive cold-water fish, and once their habitat is gone, it doesn’t come back
What Makes a Good Neighbour? Chris Humeniuk’s decision raises a hard but necessary question: Can someone who knowingly puts their neighbours' water and environment at risk still claim to be a good neighbour?

PETITION
(please complete information at the bottom)
Dear Mr. Chris Humeniuk,
I was concerned to learn that substantial amounts of water – up to 500 million litres per year – would be pumped from the proposed CBM Caledon mega-quarry and piped to the Osprey Valley Golf Course.
Much of this water will end up in the Credit River, often at warmer temperatures than the water that usually replenishes the river.
I am concerned about the potential consequences of your decision.
CBM’s own reports have indicated local private wells will likely be affected.
Research shows that Brook trout cannot survive in warmer water.
Good neighbours respect each other’s drinking water. Good neighbours protect the environment we all enjoy.
Please do not put people’s drinking water at risk.
Please do not put Brook trout and other aquatic life at risk.
Please do not put the Credit River ecosystem at risk.
I urge you to remove the Osprey Valley Golf Course as the designated water discharge route in the CBM Caledon mega-quarry application.
Thank you.
